Installation Services
With a few exceptions, such as lab benches and hoods, AIR can install your instrument or equipment in your laboratory. Most of our installations are coupled with system familiarization. Listed below are some typical questions that arise when we discuss installation services with our clients.
What is instrument installation?
Instrument installation or setup involves AIR making all of the instrument hardware and software connections necessary for the normal and routine operation of an instrument. These connections involve installation of compressed gas lines, power cables, communication, control and output devices and software settings. In most cases, the installation process is considered complete once an instrument has successfully completed specific performance based tests. These tests vary widely between instruments and usually deal with issues of specificity, sensitivity, resolution and dynamic range. In some cases, installation also involves instrument troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Installation does not involve familiarization or training and does not address method or application specific issues.
Do I need instrument installation?
There are many advantages of having AIR do your instrument installation. Having AIR do an installation provides an extra level of assurance that an instrument is performing properly. This assurance takes on added importance when purchasing a pre-owned instrument. If a lab has no experience in running an instrument, installation can be coupled with system familiarization to expedite the use of an instrument. If a lab is increasing capacity and already has a great deal of internal expertise, than installation may be an unnecessary expense.
Will my warranty be void if AIR doesn't do the installation?
Usually no, however, this issue needs to be discussed with your sales representative to make sure the warranty agreement will be in place. In most cases your warranty will not be voided if a qualified individual does the initial instrument setup.
Who will be doing the installation?
In all cases, AIR will provide a qualified service engineer to perform your instrument installation and familiarization. Most often the person doing your installation will be a full or part time AIR employee. Most of our service engineers have years of laboratory experience operating the model of instrument being installed. These individuals are in an excellent position to help you in all aspects of instrument operation including hardware connections, routine maintenance, software and report production.
In some cases, due to the specialized nature of an instrument, geographic location or scheduling conflict, AIR will subcontract an instrument installation. If a subcontractor is doing your installation, AIR will identify the individual as our subcontractor.
What will AIR provide and what do I need to provide for my installation?
AIR will provide all of the basic cables, connectors and tubing necessary for instrument installation. AIR will also provide enough support items to effectively verify an instruments performance. These items will include tools, selected test solutions, vials, caps, syringes and other items. In general, we do not provide enough consumables or standards necessary for the "normal and routine" operation of the instrument.
Unless specifically stated in the sales agreement, AIR has no responsibility for doing the site preparation for an instrument. Site preparation involves getting your building and instrument location setup with the proper infrastructure, power, benches, gases, and plumbing. AIR will provide you with the necessary information (e.g., voltage, amperage, phase, size, weight, exhaust vent requirements, cooling requirement, recommended gas purity, etc.) but it is your responsibility to have your site prepared prior to instrument installation.
What does installation cost?
The actual price for a given installation varies widely between instruments, project size and geographic location. Usually, an AIR Client Representative will provide you with a fixed price for doing a particular installation. The fixed price for doing your installation will include all normal direct costs (travel, meals, lodging, etc.) as well as all labor costs. The installation price quoted does not include instrument shipping, handling and insurance charges. In some unusual situations, AIR will quote an installation as time and materials rather than fixed price.
Problems that arise during installation that are "instrument related" are covered under the AIR installation process as well as the AIR warranty and will be repaired at no additional cost to the client.
Expenses incurred by AIR, due to poor site preparation, could result in additional charge. In our experience, however, these charges can usually be mitigated.
